Papermaking Defoamers for White Water & Wet End | INVINO®
Shortlist fatty-alcohol and polyether defoamers for surface foam and entrained-air control in paper-machine white-water circuits.
Send your furnish, foam location, temperature, pH, current chemistry and trial objective. INVINO will use those conditions to identify document-supported candidates for a controlled mill comparison. Grade selection, dosage and compatibility remain subject to your process and trial results.
Identify the Wet-End Problem Before Selecting Chemistry
Visible foam and entrained air are related, but they are not the same trial target. Record where the problem appears and what changes when machine conditions shift before comparing defoamers.
| Observation | Record before the trial | Trial objective |
|---|---|---|
| Stable foam on a wire pit, silo or white-water tank | Foam height, persistence, turbulence, stock flow and recent additive changes | Compare initial knockdown and suppression over a defined observation period |
| Air retained in stock with limited surface foam | Air-content method, sampling point, furnish, consistency and temperature | Compare air release while monitoring drainage and sheet-quality limits |
| Drainage or formation changes observed with foam | Baseline drainage, retention or formation measure, grade and machine speed | Test whether foam control changes the target without shifting another wet-end variable |
| Deposits, spots or sizing response during a chemical change | Deposit location, defect records, sizing system, retention program and current dose | Treat deposits and downstream quality as trial limits, not assumed benefits |
Compare Fatty-Alcohol and Polyether Screening Routes
Choose the first chemistry route from the problem you need to measure, then confirm it in representative white water. Chemistry names narrow the shortlist. They do not prove compatibility with a specific furnish or additive program.
Fatty-alcohol route
INVINO-5045, INVINO-5060 and INVINO-5800 are fatty-alcohol candidates for papermaking trials. Current TDS files for 5045 and 5060 describe the same public values and applications. They do not support the former fixed temperature split.
INVINO-5800 is a modified fatty-alcohol candidate for enhanced-deaeration screening. Its current TDS states an application range of 25 to 40°C and requires attention to low-speed remixing, dilution method, shear and addition point.
Polyether route
INVINO-8061 and INVINO-8062 are non-silicone polyether candidates. The current 8061 TDS names wet-end white-water systems. The May 2026 8062 TDS names papermaking, white-water circulation, wet-end applications and high-speed paper machines.
Compare both routes when furnish, circuit closure or the chemical program makes the response uncertain. Record foam knockdown, entrained-air response, drainage, deposits and downstream quality.
Current Public Grade Status for White-Water Trials
The table separates document-supported facts from screening positions that require mill validation. The order is not a performance ranking.
| Grade | Chemistry | Current public TDS facts | Screening and document note |
|---|---|---|---|
| INVINO-5045 | Fatty alcohol | Milky white liquid; pH 6.0 to 8.0; solids 30.0 ± 1.0%; viscosity at 25°C at least 100 mPa·s; white-water, wet-end and high-speed paper-machine applications | Compare in representative white water. Current public data do not establish a unique boundary versus 5060. |
| INVINO-5060 | Fatty alcohol | Milky white liquid; pH 6.0 to 8.0; solids 30.0 ± 1.0%; viscosity at 25°C at least 100 mPa·s; white-water, wet-end and high-speed paper-machine applications | Compare in representative white water. Current public data do not establish a unique boundary versus 5045. |
| INVINO-5800 | Modified fatty alcohol | White or yellowish emulsion; pH 6.0 to 8.0; solids 29.0 ± 1.0%; current TDS application range 25 to 40°C | Screen for enhanced deaeration. Remix gently at 30 to 60 rpm after long storage when separation or sediment is present. Confirm dilution and pumping conditions. |
| INVINO-8061 | Modified polyether, non-silicone | Pale yellow to colorless transparent liquid; pH 5 to 9; TDS names paper-machine wet-end white-water systems | Use as a polyether comparison candidate. Determine dosage and addition point in the mill trial. |
| INVINO-8062 | Polyether, non-silicone | Colorless to light-yellow liquid; pH 4.0 to 9.0; viscosity at 25°C 100 to 1000 mPa·s; TDS names white-water and wet-end applications | Use as a polyether comparison candidate for dynamic paper-machine conditions. Confirm compatibility and downstream limits. |
INVINO-5030 document status: a current TDS was not found in the supplied document library. The grade is outside the numeric comparison table. Request and verify its current TDS before restoring specifications or a public selection role.
Ask for the current grade-level TDS and the SDS version for your destination before approving a grade for trial.
Run a Mill Trial That Measures More Than Foam Collapse
A fast foam collapse is not enough to approve a paper-machine defoamer. Use a controlled comparison that keeps the furnish, sampling points and evaluation window consistent.
Freeze the baseline
Record paper grade, furnish, machine speed, white-water closure, temperature, pH, conductivity when available, current chemistry, dose and addition point. Document visible foam, air measurement, drainage and relevant sheet defects.
Define the trial objective
Choose surface-foam knockdown, suppression, entrained-air release or a combination. Define downstream limits for deposits, sizing response, retention, drainage, formation and surface defects.
Compare one controlled change at a time
Use the same observation points and measurement method. Establish dosage by staged mill testing. Do not transfer a fixed dose from another machine, furnish or chemistry program.
Check handling and addition conditions
Confirm direct use or dilution, mixing, pump selection and dispersion. INVINO-5800 requires particular attention to gentle remixing and current TDS handling instructions.
Approve against the full scorecard
Compare dose-response, foam and air results, drainage, deposits, chemical interactions and finished-paper limits. Keep the trial record with the TDS revision used.
Request the Current Grade-Level TDS and Destination-Specific SDS
Use the public one-page paper and pulp product overview to review the portfolio. Use current grade-level documents for technical approval.
For a TDS request, provide the grade or application, paper process and intended trial conditions. For an SDS request, also provide the destination country and required language. Do not treat one grade's document as evidence for the full series.
A COA records results for a specific supplied batch. It is not a fixed public specification and should not replace the TDS. Statements about REACH, Halal, food-contact use, composition or another compliance topic require current grade- and destination-specific support.
Wet-End Defoamer Selection Questions
What is the difference between surface foam and entrained air in paper-machine white water?
Surface foam is visible at tanks, pits or turbulent return points. Entrained air remains dispersed in the stock or white water and may require an air-content method rather than visual inspection. A trial should state which condition is the primary target and use the same observation or measurement method for every candidate.
How should we compare fatty-alcohol and polyether papermaking defoamers?
Compare both chemistry routes in representative white water when the response is uncertain. Hold the furnish, temperature, sampling points and evaluation period consistent. Measure foam knockdown, suppression, air release, drainage, deposits and downstream paper-quality limits. The chemistry family narrows the shortlist but does not prove compatibility.
What dosage and addition point should we use?
Determine dosage and addition point from staged mill testing. Record the current product, dose and feed location, then change one controlled variable at a time. Follow the current grade-level TDS for direct use, dilution, mixing and storage instructions. Do not transfer a fixed dose from another mill or paper grade.
How do we request a current TDS or SDS?
Provide the grade or target application, trial conditions and required document type. For an SDS, include the destination country and language. INVINO will check the available current version and applicable scope before release. A public portfolio overview does not replace grade-level documents.
What information helps INVINO prepare a paper-machine trial shortlist?
Send the paper grade and furnish, foam location, white-water conditions, temperature, pH, current chemistry and dose, addition point, observed problem and trial objective. Include the destination country and whether you need a TDS or SDS. INVINO will use these details to identify document-supported candidates and the variables to compare. Final selection remains subject to your mill trial.
